Business Plan 2006 - 2008
Below is One Parent Families Scotland's business plan for 2006 - 2008.
We are always pleased to hear from any organisations interested in working
collaboratively on any of the issues covered.
Partnerships
- One Parent Families: Help-line, Directory of services, Information
Work, Disability Work, Training (tax credits, CSA), Marks and Start
return to employment programme.
- Parenting Across Scotland: Help-line and Directory and Information
work. Also involvement of parent volunteers in influencing services.
- YWCA: Possible link on young parent's work
- Scottish Marriage Care: Young parent's work and relationship
work in schools.
- Gilmerton Child and Family Centre: Dads Club
- Barnardo's: Father's project

| Childcare |
Continuing to promote development of new Sitter Services and strengthening
underpinning support such as software system and Sitter Service Network.
Beginning programme of employer engagement. |
Focus on increasing the sustainability of services through diversified
service delivery and employer engagement. |
| Family Law |
Publicising the implications of the family law changes and of the
civil partnership initiative for lesbian parents. |
Continuing this work. |
| Family friendly colleges |
Preparing a Best Practice Guide in consultation with students and
college staff and also launching the Family Friendly College award.
Working with LEC's and community based adult education organisations
to encourage them to promote family friendly colleges. Exploring how
to promote family friendly practices through FE College funding systems. |
Reviewing the impact of the Best Practice guide and assessing how
to overcome any identified barriers to implementation. Holding a second
Family Friendly College award. Continuing work with LEC's and community
organisations and on college funding mechanisms. |
| Poverty |
Working through the Scottish Women's Convention and with Engender
to promote recognition of gender issues in poverty and regeneration
strategies. |
Working with other agencies to use the new public sector duty on
gender equality to promote recognition of gendered aspects of poverty. |
| Young Parents |
Working with young parents in Dundee and Edinburgh to influence
the development of integrated early years services, to input to the
sexual health strategy and also to develop further peer education
work with schools. Also providing an input on the youth strategy. |
Working with young parents in other areas such as Fife to influence
local service development. |
| Disability Issues |
Establishing a Steering group of parents with disability to oversee
the work of our project and also a Network of parents interested in
campaigning to improve local services. |
Continuing to support parents in influencing local services, including
collecting examples of good practice to include in training materials. |
| Employability Framework |
Engaging with the development of the employability framework though
participation in Joined up for Jobs in Edinburgh and continued involvement
in the Marks and Start employment programme. Also linking work in
Dundee to the framework. |
Continuing with this in Edinburgh and Dundee. |

| Helpline and information services: |
Help-line: Piloting the gateway approach through Parenting
Across Scotland. Developing an extended Fact sheet range and also
restructuring the OPFS web site. Developing use of our Directory of
local services further. Continuing our monthly e- bulletin for members
and other subscribers. |
Reviewing the lessons from the pilot and developing the help-line
accordingly. Continuing to develop new fact sheets and to extend the
web based information available. |
| Help for lone parents with additional support needs:

Developing close working links with key disability organisations.
Appointing extra staff who will strengthen our capacity to advise
and support lone parents with extra support needs.
Developing new fact sheets as required and also strengthening disability
information in our Directory of local services. |
Continuing the work begun in year one, taking account of changes
in incapacity benefits and publicising these. |
| Work with young Parents and lone fathers: |
Providing regular information to a national network of agencies
working with young parents. Seeking funds to develop information materials
for lone and contact fathers with older children and networking informally
at a national level with others working. |
Continue supporting the Network as in previous year and develop
work with fathers if funds secured. |
| Member participation |
Questionnaire sent out to all members to gauge interest in being
more involved. Results collated and action plan produced. Members
involved more in policy work |
Continued development of this. |
| Lesbian parents: |
Continuing to offer an office contact for Lesbian Mothers Scotland
and Edinburgh Lesbian Mothers group. Maintaining up to date advice
through our web site for lesbian parents and keeping the Lesbian Mothers
Scotland web site updated. |
Continuation of the same. |
Local Service Development:
- Childcare Services: Development and consolidation of existing
services in Dundee, Angus, Aberdeenshire, North Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.
Possible development of one further service. In childcare@home Angus
and Dundee will cover a Sitter Service and a mobile crèche service.
- Family Support Services: Maintaining and developing existing
services in Dundee and Maddiston
- Father's work: Developing this in Edinburgh, consolidating
it in Maddiston and exploring ways of developing in Dundee.
- Young Parents: Exploring opportunities for further development
of direct services for young parents, possibly in collaboration with
other agencies using funding available from the Big Lottery Young People's
Programme.
- Employability: Continuing to engage with the employability
agenda in Edinburgh and Dundee and exploring opportunities for developing
this further
Staff Development
- IT: Continued development of IT skills and infrastructure throughout
the organisation, including intranet.
- Common Services Training and Support: Developing a programme
of meetings of groups of staff with shared interests, starting with
childcare@home staff and Administrators.
- Externally recognised training: Developing a programme of support
for staff for externally accredited training where needed to meet registration
requirements of the Social Services Council.
