Director's Comment

Sue Robertson: Director of OPFSThrough our increasingly well known help-line, we have been able to assist over three thousand lone parents in Scotland with a wide variety of issues. We are now carrying out research with young lone parents to assess how our services need to be adapted to meet their needs.

We have also continued to build innovative childcare services. Following the establishment of Sitter Services in Dundee and North Lanarkshire, the Scottish Executive recognised this work by funding us for two years to second Ann McKenzie, Manager of Childcare @ Home Dundee, to a National Sitter Service Development role, starting in March 2003.

Our partnership working has also progressed. At a GB level, we have continued to work with One Parent Families in England and Wales, delivering the help-line, doing joint policy work on support for lone parents in education and training and developing a shared newsletter.

We have also successfully delivered our Scotland’s Families multi-disciplinary training on changing families throughout Scotland and secured funds for research on family policy and children’s reactions to family change through the consortium.

Much has been achieved working collaboratively, but many more lone parents still need our help. Please help us to continue our development by becoming a member or regular supporter of One Parent Families Scotland.
