Past Work In April 2001 One Parent Families Scotland began the Steps to Employment Project to assist lone parents eligible for the New Deal for Lone Parents to move into employment. The Project offered parents in Edinburgh and Falkirk a part time training course in IT and Communications followed by work experience placements. Lone Parents Guidance & Support Project This project was set up to support lone parents in the Edinburgh area who wanted to go into employment, training or education. It offered support through individual guidance, a 'study buddy' mentoring scheme, outreach work in South Edinburgh and through the Lone Parents Network. The issue of student support, especially funding and childcare, was been raised and pursued a better deal for lone parents. Peter Johnstone, a male childcare student and member of the Men and Childcare Scotland working group, conducted a survey in Spring 2000 which confirmed the low number of men on childcare courses at Scottish colleges. Twenty-five of the 3,245 childcare students were male, less than 1% and significantly below the UK figure. These survey results were presented at a Children in Scotland conference in May 2000, leading Equal Opportunities committee convenor Kate Mclean to agree to raise the matter in the Scottish Parliament. The findings were also included in a Scottish Executive report of childcare training. OPFS supported the Men and Childcare network in providing training events and pressing for more support for male students and men working in childcare. The Under 12's Project offered a diverse range of activities for adults and children in the Mid Craigie and Linlathen areas of Dundee, many of which involve innovative partnerships working with other agencies in the Community. The project is now independently run. Originally, the main focus of this project was to combat poverty and improve the environment by collecting unwanted good quality furniture and other household equipment and deliver such goods free of charge to families and others in need. This project moved to being an independent company from 1st April 2000.
