Child Maintenance Debt League Table for Scotland
Posted on 12th August 2010
Gingerbread, the national charity for single parents in England and Wales has obtained a league table of debt owed by non-resident parents for each parliamentary constituency in Britain.
The arrears represent a culmination of the Child Support Agency's 17 years of operation. To see the league table for Scotland download the 'Child Support Arrears in Scotland 2010' document (PDF), below.
Since April 2010, child maintenance has been ignored when calculating all means-tested benefits. The Growing Up in Scotland research shows that 73% of children in lone parent families surveyed from birth are persistently poor. Regular and reliable child maintenance payments are an essential part of the fight to overcome child poverty.
One Parent Families Scotland produces a factsheet explaining child maintenance and the Child Support Agency and Gingerbread has The Top Ten Tips for Pursuing Child Maintenance (PDF). We are keen to hear from lone parents who have elected to make a voluntary maintenance agreement and how good these arrangments have been.
