Director's Comment: Lone
Parents Struggling for Equality
The Office for National Statistics report stating that the quarter
of children brought up in lone parent families face poor housing
and low incomes was no surprise to One Parent Families Scotland.
We were set up back in 1944 to fight for equality for children of
unmarried parents. Although the legal stigma of illegitimacy has
gone, the struggle for equal opportunities continues.

Changes to Lone
Parents' Entitlement to Income Support
From 27th October 2008, any lone parent, with a youngest child
of 12 years or over, who makes a new or repeat benefit claim will
be required to claim Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) and not Income
Support (IS). This means that lone parents with a youngest child
of 12 may only be entitled to benefit if they are actively seeking
work.

overhaul to the Tax Credit system.

Increased Government Pressure on Lone Parents Condemned
One Parent Families Scotland is extremely unhappy with the proposals
unveiled today to require lone parents to seek work when their youngest
child reaches 12 and later to reduce this to seven.
