Because of the changes in benefits requiring lone parents to work when their children are young, many lone parents in Scotland are now thinking of improving their skills by going back to college or university. One Parent Families Scotland has produced three factsheets covering the funding of further and higher education and nursing courses.

The government is introducing changes to lone parent’s benefits so that people with younger children have to look for work as a condition of claiming benefit. OPFS, Scotland’s only dedicated lone parent organisation, has produced a fact sheet "Lone Parents: Changes to Income Support & Jobseeker’s Allowance" to provide worried lone parents with more information.

One Parent Families Scotland has just published a new Rights Guide for Lone Parents, highlighting the key changes in welfare reform that will affect lone parents during the coming year. The Guide describes the new financial measures introduced by the government to assist lone parents to move to and remain in employment.
