Autumn 2013 Training Courses

The introduction of Universal Credit that replaces six of the key benefits and tax credits will herald a shift in the way families access financial support from the state. The benefit cap and bedroom subsidy are already causing hardship across Scotland. Never has it been more vital for professionals working with families to understand these changes. Then come to one of our information sessions. Our half day courses are continually updated to ensure they contain the most recent information.

Welfare Reform

This course provides an overview of the changes that have already been implemented and those that will be introduced during the course of 2013. It covers Child Benefit, tax credits, Employment & Support Allowance, housing benefit, council tax reduction, Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment and the Scottish Welfare Fund. A basic understanding of the current benefit system will be assumed.

The three hour course will run on the following dates:

  • Thursday 05 September 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Thursday 19 September 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Thursday 26 September 2013, 9.30am-12.30pm (Edinburgh)
  • Tuesday 15 October 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Tuesday 05 November 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Thursday 14 November 2013, 1-4pm (Edinburgh)
  • Thursday 28 November 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)

Universal Credit

This course covers the framework of the new Universal Credit that will replace six of the existing benefits and tax credits. It includes some case study calculations to enable participants to understand exactly how Universal Credit will work. Please bring a pocket calculator with you.

The three hour course will run on the following dates:

  • Thursday 12 September 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Tuesday 08 October 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Thursday 17 October 2013, 1-4pm (Edinburgh)
  • Tuesday 29 October 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Thursday 21 November 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)

Child Maintenance Service

This course covers the new child maintenance service that will eventually replace the Child Support Agency and the two schemes it currently administers. The new scheme is now being gradually rolled out. The session includes information on charging for the new scheme, how child maintenance is calculated, enforcement action and shared care arrangements.

The three hour course will run on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 19 November 2013, 1-4pm (Glasgow)
  • Thursday 12 December 2013, 9.30am-12.30pm (Edinburgh)

Each course costs £25 per person.
All Edinburgh courses will take place at One Parent Families Scotland, 13 Gayfield Square, Edinburgh EH1 3NX.
