Child maintenance charges come into force today

Child maintenance charges come into force today

From today (30 June 2014) parents will be charged for the use of The Child Maintenance Service.

An initial fee of £20 will be charged for most new applications to the Child Maintenance Service. For parents who apply to the Child Maintenance Service for a maintenance calculation to be carried out and are able to make arrangements for payment between themselves there will be no further charges.

If agreement cannot be reached, and the Child Maintenance Service is used to collect maintenance payments from the paying parent and give them to the receiving parent, paying parents will be charged a collection fee of 20% on top of their usual maintenance payments and parents receiving the maintenance will have a 4% fee deducted from their usual maintenance payments.

The Child Maintenance Service will also impose enforcement charges upon parents who do not pay maintenance in full and on time.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new statutory system you can speak to our experienced Advice Workers on our Lone Parent Helpline Monday – Friday, 9:30am – 4pm: 0808 801 0323.
