Fair work commitment

OPFS is committed to Fair Work First and recognises that high quality services are critically dependent on a workforce that is well rewarded, well-motivated, well-led, has access to appropriate opportunities for training and skills development, are diverse and are engaged in decision making.

OPFS has adopted Fair Work principles and the following practices have been developed with cross organisation input and cooperation:

  • OPFS Values have been updated to reflect the organisation and how the work is carried out. Staff across OPFS were involved in the development, discussion, and implementation of the values.
  • The established staff-led JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) group provides a discussion forum for policy, issues arising and potential developments in practice and procedure that can then be taken to the leadership team for implantation.
  • Peer support for workers to support each other, develop their skills and shadow other workers.
  • Systems, channels, staff meetings and staff surveys encourage open sharing of resources and ideas across the organisation.
  • Support for learning and development for all staff. Core training for all staff has been implemented along with training for specific job purposes. Personal and Professional development of staff is supported by ensuring they have capacity to undertake their learning by arranging flexible hours, duties, and locations. Development opportunities are shared with staff to give them access to skills development prospects that can help them fulfil their potential.
  • Nurturing talent, including a strong commitment to; promoting equality of opportunity and developing our workforce which reflects the population of Scotland in terms of characteristics such as age, gender, religion or belief, race, sexual orientation, and disability.
  • Fair and equal pay policy that includes OPFS being a Living Wage Accredited Employer.
  • Development of employment practices, including no inappropriate use of zero hours contracts; offer flexible and family friendly working practices for all workers from day one of their employment. We are accredited with Family Friendly Working Scotland.
  • Employee assistance scheme enhanced as of 2024 to include support for family members, financial advice, mental health support, and general health advice, along with continued access to counselling.
