Could you benefit from the Lone Parent Champions?
A group of 15 single parents from across Glasgow have now successfully completed our OPFS Lone Parent Champion programme.
The course empowers individuals to champion the rights of single parents in response to the recent changes to the benefit system and welfare reform.
All of our volunteers have participated in training that aimed to provide a broad understanding of current welfare rights to enable our volunteers to signpost and support other lone parents affected by welfare reform.
The training also focused on providing volunteers with the confidence to speak out within local communities and organisations about the barriers and challenges faced by lone parents, particularly in relation to welfare reform.
Lone Parent Champions have also completed a full Volunteer Induction Programme and Lone Parent Peer Mentoring Training.
Our champions will soon be matched up with other single parents to:
- Support them on a one-to-one basis to access welfare rights, money advice and other OPFS services.
- Advise them on where to apply for benefits by signposting them to the appropriate support services.
- Encourage and support them to attend OPFS group work sessions focusing on the impact of welfare reform.
- Empower them to grow in confidence and independence.
