Policy & Campaigns
There are over 174,000 lone parents with 295,000 children in Scotland.
- Around half are in income poverty.
- They are twice as likely, compared to others to ‘cycle’ between work and welfare.
- Lone parents have sole responsibility for the combined roles of breadwinner and main carer. This is a unique challenge facing lone parent families.
OPFS contributes to the policy agenda through utilising its contact with parents & capturing their experiences to respond to consultations and to campaign for positive policies.
Lone parent families are affected by UK Government policies on welfare benefits, employment and child maintenance and by Scottish Government policies on employability, skills, education, health, childcare, family law and social work. OPFS represents lone parents’ views and engages families with policy makers on these important areas of life. During the past year OPFS has been active in a number of social policy areas.
