Press: Single parent families introduced to the Highlands
Press Release: 21 October 2015
HF Holidays’ Alltshellach hotel near Ballachulish has just hosted 12 families from inner city Glasgow on a weekend break introducing them to the joys of the great outdoors.
The walking holidays’ provider got together with One Parent Families Scotland to offer disadvantaged single parent families – who couldn’t otherwise afford it – the opportunity to get away and spend quality time together in the Highlands.
On the two-night fully inclusive break, the children and their parents were treated to a treasure hunt in the expansive grounds of the fine highland residence on the shores of Loch Leven, a guided walk following the Caledonian Canal, and also an afternoon at the Nevis Centre in Fort William.
HF Holidays’ Pathways Fund allows the company to provide Feel Good Breaks in partnership with the Family Holiday Association to give selected urban families an opportunity to get away from everyday stresses. The breaks also reflect the benefits a holiday can have on a family in need. Each two-night break includes outdoor activities like walking and cycling, healthy meals and a supportive and sociable atmosphere created by HF Holidays’ staff and volunteers.
Sarah Davis of HF Holidays, in charge of organising Feel Good Breaks, strongly believes in the benefits of re-engaging families with Britain’s countryside:
“This is a wonderful opportunity for stressed parents and less fortunate children to get away, to walk and run around in the great outdoors and have fun together as a family. The families we welcome on these breaks would not otherwise be able to afford a family holiday and it is our mission to get children enjoying the wonderful countryside we have all over the country, not just in the Scottish Highlands.”
Satwat Rehman, Director of One Parent Families Scotland, said:
“Many lone parents are struggling to make ends meet and going on holiday is just a distant dream. That’s why we are particularly grateful to HF Holidays and the Family Holiday Association for making it possible for 12 families to have the time of their lives in the Highlands! Feedback from the parents and children has been extremely positive and we hope that more families can benefit from this opportunity in the future.”
HF Holidays is a walking holidays co-operative owned by its members and with a long history of promoting the benefits of healthy outdoor activity.
One Parent Families Scotland aims to encourage and enable parents across Scotland to make the most of the opportunities available to them so they can flourish as happy, healthy and achieving families. One Parent Families Scotland provides help to all single parent families; mums, dads, young parents and kinship carers.
