Tackling Family Poverty
The number of families in Dundee, living in poverty, exceeds the Scottish average. Almost 30% of Dundee’s children suffer from the impact of living in poor households. Many of the families we support across the city live in defined deprived areas with poor amenities.
OPFS Family Support Services in Dundee have recently launched ‘Giveaway Days’ from two of our Community Hubs based in St Mary’s and Fintry. These sessions give local families access to free essential items such as basic toiletries and, through generous public donations, good quality clothing, bedding and small household items.
Workers are on hand to support families who attend and free snacks are provided. During the school holidays, we also provide free lunches via the city wide Family Fun and Food Programme which aims to minimise child hunger outwith term time.
A programme of activities is available to help with social isolation, encourage peer support and beneficial engagement with other community activities. The programmes are provided via our 3 community hubs in Whitfield, St Mary’s and Fintry, the latest to be delivered during the October school holidays.
